Brexit

The United Kingdom officially left the European Union on 1 January 2021. Brexit has brought along several changes for UK citizens travelling to Slovakia or living here. We have summarised the most important points below.

If you are a UK citizen planning to travel to Slovakia
According to the Regulation (EU) 2016/399 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 9 March 2016 on a Union Code on the rules governing the movement of persons across borders (Schengen Borders Code) you are deemed a citizen of a third country, hence not having the right for free movement and settlement in the EU. To see full entry requirements to Slovakia, visit gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/slovakia.

If you are a UK citizen living in Slovakia
If you were legally resident in Slovakia before 1 January 2021, your rights will be protected by the Withdrawal Agreement. However, you should check that you are correctly registered and should get a new residence document (the so-called Povolenie na pobyt) by 30 June 2021 to evidence your rights.

You should also exchange your current EU Residence Card for a new residency cardexchange your UK driving licence for a Slovak one and check you are correctly covered for healthcare.

All necessary information regarding passports, travel, healthcare and other aspects to keep in mind is available at gov.uk/guidance/living-in_slovakia.
