500000-airport-kosice

On the heels of its most successful charter season ever, Košice International Airport can now boast another first. On Wednesday, 21st November 2018, the five hundred thousandth passenger of the year passed through its gates, marking a major milestone for the airport.

The lucky passenger was Lucia Mattová, who received a €500 credit from Košice International Airport toward the purchase of an air ticket to her choice of the over 500 destinations served from the airport. Ms Mattová departed Košice on a Dash 8 - Q400 operated by Eurowings on a scheduled flight to Düsseldorf. Celebrations continued throughout the afternoon at Košice International Airport as the airport marked its 500,000th passenger, and the festive atmosphere could be felt by passengers as well as their families and colleagues who came to see them off or to welcome their arrival.

The airport sponsored a special event with refreshments as a symbol of gratitude for each and every passenger who has made this eastern Slovakia metropolis their choice for arrival or departure. Passengers had the opportunity to win one of 500 prizes, 5 of which were return tickets for 2 to Munich, Germany.

Michael Tmej, Chief executive officer and chairman of the management board of Košice International Airport: „Being CEO and Chairman of the Management Board, I am glad and proud, that we can celebrate reaching 500.000 passengers per year already in November – thus enabling us to offer our customers a steadily growing choice of airlines and destinations. This was only possible, because passengers used these opportunities and give a strong sign, that there is a market in Košice which is of interest for airlines. Especially in this challenging year, our strong efforts bring now very good results – for us as an airport, but also for the economy and tourism in city and region. A big THANK YOU to all our passengers, partners and staff members to make this possible!“

The growing demand for charter flights helped to bump up the total number of passengers passing through Košice International Airport, but scheduled routes and increasing interest in air travel played a significant role in achieving the 500,000-passenger milestone.

Regular flights in winter timetable at the airport Košice are operated by the following airlines:

Austrian Airlines Vienna (11 times a week)
Czech Airlines Prague (15 times a week), Bratislava (6 times a week)
Polish Airlines LOT Warsaw (8 times a week)
Wizz Air London Luton (7 times a week)
Turkish Airlines Istanbul (4 times a week)
Eurowings Düsseldorf (4 times a week), Munich (2 times a week)

Despite the fact that an internal decision by WizzAir earlier in the year meant Košice International Airport lost three successful routes (Doncaster Sheffield, Cologne, Tel Aviv), the airport remains enthusiastic and continues to work toward enticing new airlines. The arrival of Eurowings is a great success, once more opening the doors to the world and offering passengers the opportunity to explore the German cities of Munich and Düsseldorf. Ryanair, the largest European airline, will begin flying London Southend Airport to/from Košice three times a week beginning in April 2019.
